College of Informatics

The common thread of informatics is information - its acquisition, collection, analysis, manipulation, application, packaging, presentation, and marketing.

All of these activities involve informatics. It is where the science and technology that handle information, meet the human arts and psychology of delivering it, and brings them together under a single theory of applied technology.

Today there is virtually no area of business, science, industry, or entertainment that does not use some aspect of informatics. They all need a means of managing information and presenting it in the most useful and effective way.

To function well in today's world, you need practical knowledge of both the technical management and the artistic presentation.

When you graduate with a degree from the NKU College of Informatics, you will have both the technical knowledge and the communication skills to remain a highly valued operator in this age of information.

What is Informatics?

What is informatics?

Good question. You're inquisitive. We like that.

Professors will tell you informatics relates information to digital technology.

But what does that mean?

It means informatics is all around us, in the ways we live, work and play. More than likely, you've used some form of informatics in the past few minutes, and improving your knowledge of it will only make you more prepared for the ever-changing technological world.

Because informatics is for everyone.

By choosing to study informatics, you have the power to pick your passion. Computers have an impact on every part of our world, whether it's art, language, literature, education, entertainment, psychology, biology, music, history or political science.

We can show you how technology is taking your chosen field into the information age so that when you graduate, you are a modern-day renaissance person, prepared for the continuing evolution in your career. You will have the technological skills and the communication skills to succeed.

And you'll need these skills.

Technology has allowed the information you use on a daily basis to be more accessible and organized than ever before. The music that once required a CD player to be heard is now digitized for your iPod. Imagine the day when everyone can search for those songs online not by lyrics, but by rhythm or chord progression.

Imagine creating software that can recognize the limb movements of ballet dancers and can record their choreography to be replicated years from now, like a musical score.

Imagine doctors and nurses having a patient's information on a digital tablet that contains every medical record since the time of the patient's birth.

Imagine a brand-new place built especially for the College of Informatics, with Computer Assisted Virtual Environment rooms and the latest technological innovations, created from the ground-up to be a state-of-the-art facility designed for discovery.

You won't have to imagine for long; our new building — called Griffin Hall — is scheduled to be completed in Fall of 2011. We're excited about the possibilities it holds for our students and for the community.

Informatics is a rapidly growing field, one that affects every part of our lives.

Come join the revolution.
