Jimmie Manning, Ph.D.
Graduate Program Director; Assistant Professor
Dr. Manning is in his fourth year as an Assistant Professor for the Communication Graduate Program and currently serves as Graduate Program Director. He teaches courses in relationships, gender, qualitative research methods, communication theory, and media criticism.
His research program largely explores social support and social control in relationships, often through an interpretive lens. This unique line of research includes the social scientific study of interpersonal relationships; cultural criticism of relationship representations; and theorizing regarding sex, gender, and sexuality in cultures. His research has resulted in numerous journal articles, book chapters, encyclopedia entries, and government research manuals as well as seven top paper or panel awards from regional or national conferences. He also has a co-edited volume with Carey Noland and Janet MacLennan, Case Studies of Communication about Sex, due in 2010 from Cambridge and recently edited a special issue of the Kentucky Journal of Communication on the future of relationships.
Professor Manning is quite active on the NKU campus where he serves on the Women's and Gender Studies Advisory Committee (and as an Affiliate Professor in Gender Studies), Chair of the Communication Graduate Council, and serves on the Core Informatics Committee. He was also recently appointed to the Vice-Provost’s Research Advisory Committee and is a facilitator for service learning training on the NKU campus.
He is a lifetime member of the National Communication Association, the Central States Communication Association, and the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language, and Gender. He is also a member of the International Communication Association; the International Association of Relationship Researchers; the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality; and the Kentucky Communication Association. He currently serves as Chair of the Masters Education Section for NCA; on the Executive Board of OSCLG; and as the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Caucus chair for CSCA. He is also the Vice-President-elect for KCA.
Dr. Manning recently received the 2009 Outstanding New Teacher Award from the Central States Communication Association. Additionally, he has twice received the Kentucky Communication Association Graduate Mentor Award for outstanding mentorship of graduate students and the Applegate Communication Researcher award; and the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language, and Gender recently recognized him with an award for his groundbreaking research on coming out.
He received his Ph.D. in Communication Studies (Interpersonal Communication and Cultural Studies), G.C. in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (Social Control and Sexuality), and M.A. in Communication Studies (Organizational Communication, Political Communication, and Media Rhetoric) from the University of Kansas. He also holds a B.A. in English and Ethnic/Gender Studies, a B.F.A. in Dramatic Arts, and a B.S.E. in Communication and Social Sciences from Emporia State University.
