Cady Short-Thompson, Ph.D.

Dr. Short-Thompson is pleased to serve as the chair of the Communication Department. She particularly values her excellent faculty and staff, talented students, and our shared bright future. Dr. Short-Thompson was the founding Graduate Program Director of our Master's in Communication program from 2005-2008. She has been a member of the communication faculty since 1996 and served as the founding coordinator of the Public Relations major program (2002-2004).

Dr. Short-Thompson's primary areas of specialization are political communication, persuasion, gendered communication, and rhetorical criticism. Political campaign communication research has been her major focus, including longitudinal, survey research conducted prior to the New Hampshire Primary each presidential election year, as well as in-depth analyses of women candidates' campaign communication at all levels of elective politics. She has presented and published her research in numerous places. Dr. Short-Thompson also enjoys serving as an invited political commentator and writer for the Cincinnati Enquirer and various other news organizations. She is co-authoring a textbook on the campaign communication of women in politics for Rowman and Littlefield.

Dr. Short-Thompson has served in numerous leadership roles and on various task forces on campus and in the community. Examples of her leadership and involvement include: member of the founding Northern Kentucky University Research Foundation Board, Mayerson Student Philanthropic Project professor, Honors Course Program professor and advisor, member of the Public Engagement Realignment Task Force, selected participant in the Women's Institute for Leadership Development, member of President Votruba's Vision, Values and Voices Team, participant in the NKU Undergraduate Research and Creativity Fair, four-year Chair of the University-Community Partnership Grant Proposal Review Committee, Chair of the College Curriculum Committee, elected member of the Faculty Senate, and member of the General Education Reform Design Team. Dr. Short-Thompson currently serves as the Chair of the university-wide Graduate Council and is a member of the Council of Chairs.

Additionally, she has been honored with the Strongest Influence Award (2004), two Spark Awards for Faculty Excellence (2003, 2002), two Norse Leadership Society Awards (2003, 2001), and Citizen of the Year in Wyoming, Ohio (2004). In 2007, she received the Frank Sinton Milburn Outstanding Professor Award for excellent teaching, research, service and leadership at NKU.

Dr. Short-Thompson resides in Wyoming, Ohio with her husband Steve and their three children.
