Internship Opportunities

The range and variety of internships available to NKU communication students are enormous because of the breadth and scope of communication activities in the Greater Cincinnati area. As a top-30 broadcast market with a host of media opportunities, Greater Cincinnati has a wide array of mass media outlets and ancillary services such as advertising, marketing, public relations, and production agencies.

It also has countless small and large corporations with employee communication, public relations, investor relations, advertising, technical writing, and other internal communication units, to say nothing of hundreds of non-profit organizations with similar communication needs. This gives students lots of choices in trying to find a match for their interests.

Dozens of organizations contact the Communication Department each year seeking interns, and many have on-going internship opportunities that accept students year after year.

  • Copies of recent requests are posted on the internship bulletin board and in the internship book in Landrum 134.
  • You can also meet with the internship coordinator to learn about local organizations that have previously used or are currently requesting NKU communication interns.
  • And remember, you don't have to go to a previous internship site, you can initiate your own internship somewhere that has never had one before.

Securing an internship is much like finding and holding a job. The search and selection process is very similar, and so is the ultimate responsibility. It rests with the student who wants to do an internship. The faculty coordinator will help identify suitable organizations and try to provide the names of contact people at those organizations, but prospective interns have to take the initiative and prepare their resumes, apply for internships, make appointments for selection interviews, and ultimately be accepted as interns by a host organization. They are also responsible for having their host site and planned internships duties approved by the faculty internship coordinator.
