Internship Requirements

There's more to an internship than having a communication job. Although hands-on work experience is the key defining characteristic of internships, there's more to a successful internship than showing up and working at a job site. It's an integral part of a total college experience, and it has a strong academic component. The internships offered by the NKU Communication Department are full-fledged, upper-division, three credit hour academic courses that have assigned readings and required written assignments.

Although the specific details remain subject to change until the official course syllabus is distributed at the start of each academic term, communication interns may be expected to:

  • attend an intern orientation meeting at the beginning of the semester;
  • complete a minimum of 150 hours at an approved work site with an approved work site supervisor;
  • write progress reports which analyze their internship experiences and relate them to concepts covered in assigned readings and in previous classes;
  • participate in discussions with the faculty coordinator and other interns about their internship experiences and the assigned text;
  • submit a resume suitable for seeking an entry-level communication position; and
  • have a wrap-up interview with the faculty coordinator at the end of the internship.

Internship grades are officially assigned by the faculty coordinator, but a significant portion of that final grade is based on a written performance evaluation submitted by the intern's work site supervisor. The remainder of the grade is based on the quality of the intern's written work and participation in required meetings.
