Journalism in the Digital Age
What will I do at the digital journalism camp?

A lot. You learn how to ask the questions that make people talk and how to tell the difference between a news story and all the other fluff and junk on the Web. You write stories. Produce videos. Record podcasts. And publish it all on the Web for all your friends to see. Here’s a closer look at just a few of the things we have planned for you:
- How Can I Make People Talk?
Learn the 10 most common mistakes beginning interviewers make — and how to avoid them. See demonstrations of good — and bad — interviewing. Then you'll ask the questions when you interview sources for your own stories.
- Meet the Professionals:
Editors and reporters from the Cincinnati Enquirer, Kypost.com and the Community Press give you an inside look at the life of a journalist.
- Is This News?
Learn what makes a news story and what doesn't. Discover the secrets of finding sources and preparing for interviews.
- Hunting Down Stories:
Story ideas are all around us — but you have to be looking in the right places to find them. Our brainstorming session will give you a long list of creative ideas to take back to your high school publication.
- Wonders of the Web:
The Web gives journalists many new ways to tell stories. Discover the many ways your school can take advantages of online technology.
- Adding Sound to Words:
With a digital tape recorder, you can turn your interviews into podcasts and audio slide shows. We'll show you how.
- Pictures Tell the Story:
Anybody can take a snapshot – but journalists know how to make a photo tell a story. Bruce Crippen, a former Cincinnati Post photographer, will help you tell the difference. You'll then grab your camera and shoot a photo assignment of a campus event. Later in the week you'll combine your photos with sound to produce an audio slide show.
- Shooting and editing video:
Learn the basics of good news video, then use your skills to shoot a campus event. Afterward, professional video producers and NKU electronic media students will help you edit your moving pictures into a journalistic story for publication.
- What You Can — And Can't — Say in a High School Newspaper:
Writing and editing high school publications raises all kinds of legal questions. We’ll give you the real scoop on the law and high school journalism.
- Plus:
NKU faculty, students and media professionals will provide one-on-one coaching – helping you grow as a writer, reporter and media producer.
