Certificate in Business Informatics

This 12 semester-hour program is designed to provide basic elements of the application of Information Systems processes using Business Informatics courses. It offers an opportunity for people to gain additional skills and knowledge necessary to successfully fulfill their respective roles in the increasingly technology oriented and ever-changing business environment.

The Business Informatics Certificate will be awarded upon successful completion of the following four courses:

INF 101 Computer Literacy and Informatics: This course helps students understand basic concepts of information in a context including, but not limited to computer technology; examination of hardware and software; the impact computers have on society including employment, privacy, ethics and security; and, working with information as a resource. The course includes computer laboratory exercises in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) and Internet technology applications.  PREREQ:  None.

INF 110 Business Programming:  Strategies, techniques, and tools for professional programming in a business environment; problem definition, software design, program design, and system implementation; development of systems of programs to implement common business applications.

INF 282 Introduction to Databases:  Core concepts for the design, creation, and manipulation of relational databases. Includes Analysis of data requirements, conceptual modeling, definition of the relational model, relational database design and normalization, and database implementation; manipulation of relational databases using relational algebra with SQL.

BIS 300 Management Information Systems: Principles of MIS designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of Management Information Systems and to apply problem-solving skills in Excel, Access, and Web development. PREREQ: Demonstrated competency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint (e.g., completion of INF 101 or INF 110) or permission of instructor.

The Business Informatics Certificate prepares students to understand and effectively use some of today's new technologies. This program focuses on a variety of core competencies for professional development, including an office productivity suite, basic application programming, an understanding of database technology, and how a Management Information System assists in creating and maintaining organizational efficiencies. Certificate holders will be prepared to understand and use various applications and processes in a business environment.

As an undergraduate certificate, the Business Informatics Certificate will help educate both regular students and community members who desire specific skill sets to succeed in their chosen life roles; and contribute to their communities.

It is designed to be available both in traditional and distance format. It is self contained. The courses prepare students by increasing their ability to use tools and processes to enhance efficiency. By increasing familiarity with various applications, the Certificate will help students accept changes more readily.
 
Many students will likely just be enhancing their proficiency on their current, job but some will gain knowledge that could lead to jobs benefiting from increased productivity in the Information Systems area.
