Courses he often teaches include graphics programming, including a graduate course covering game engine design, as well as a variety of courses in computer programming, artificial intelligence, and the theory of computation.

His broad international interests led Dr. Kirby to co-found NKU's Alternative Spring Break program, which has been taking students to work in community development centers in Mexico City since 1999. During 2000-01 he lived in Korea while working as a visiting research professor at Sogang University in Seoul. He currently writes a column (in Korean) for the U.S. edition of the Korea Times.

Dr. Kirby received the Outstanding Junior Faculty Award when in the College of Arts and Sciences, and in 1998 he received the George Polya Award of the Mathematical Association of America.
