Gary Newell, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Computer Science
Gary Newell, Associate Professor, Computer Science, has been with NKU since 2001. He teaches Operating Systems, Theory of Computation, Social, Legal, Ethical Issues of Computing, Programming and Introductory Information Technology.

Why does he teach? "It beats slinging burgers. Oh, and like a friend of mine is fond of answering when asked this question - 'Why do I teach in Higher Education? Three reasons — June July and August.' All jokes aside," Newell says, "Teaching is a wonderful profession. The opportunity to share and explore knowledge and ideas and to possibly create new knowledge is simply exciting."

He has a bachelor's degree from Worcester State College, a master's degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Arizona. He's taught at Simpson College in Iowa and McKendree College in Illinois.

Newell looks to broadening participation in computing. The under-representation of many minority groups in computing is a serious problem that must be addressed. He teaches workshops to help minority groups understand and be able to utilize computers and newer technology.

Newell likes NKU because it isn't mired down in bureaucracy, good ideas can be implemented quickly, and it's a very good fit with the people and personalities.

After an unfortunate run in with a bird and his head while teaching a class outside, Newell refrains from exterior sessions; Don't even try. It also wouldn't surprise him to find out if his students called him, "that mean looking bald guy."

Little known facts: he's deaf in one ear and plays trivia on Buzztime, which is played competitively by thousands of people.
